Overview

This course is only available to those currently in employment and partially funded under the Skills to Advance initiative.
Skills to Advance is a national initiative that provides upskilling and reskilling opportunities to employees in jobs undergoing change and to those currently employed in vulnerable sectors. Skills to Advance aims to equip employees with the skills they need to progress in their current role or to adapt to the changing job market. Skills to Advance helps employers identify skills needs and invest in their workforce by providing subsidised education and training to staff.

Course Content
The aim of the programme is to demystify GenAI and empower learners to confidently begin integrating tools and technologies into their professional environments. The programme seeks to bridge the gap between the theoretical knowledge of AI and its practical application, enabling learners to critically consider how to harness the potential of GenAI.
Course Objectives
1. To explore with learners the fundamentals of GenAI and to create awareness of how it works and fits within the wider context of the umbrella of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
2. To equip learners with the skills to identify, use, and experiment with a variety of GenAI tools, and to further explore how these technologies could enhance their productivity.
3. To guide learners to develop ethical and legal awareness, and simple approaches to mitigate risk in line with organisational policies for responsible, safe and fair use of AI.
4. To equip learners with simple prompt crafting skills to optimise the outputs of GenAI tools to tailor, review, and modify outputs to their specific professional needs.
5. To provide opportunities for learners to critically reflect on the potential of GenAI technologies and to begin to apply some of these tools in their business contexts.
On completion of this module, a learner will be able to:
1. Explain the core principles of GenAI and its place within the broader context of Artificial Intelligence.
2. Demonstrate the ethical and legal use of GenAI tools to produce a range of content modes in a professional context.
3. Use prompt crafting skills to optimise the outputs of GenAI tools.
4. Evaluate suitable GenAI solutions in the context of their professional roles reflecting on their use, impact, limitations, and ethical implications in various business contexts.
Indicative Content
Unit 1: Fundamentals of Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs)
1. Understand Generative AI: Learn about the high-level features of Generative AI, including its definition, history, and how it differs from other types of AI. Understand the role of Generative AI in creating new content, such as text, images, data and media. Explain the broader landscape of Artificial Intelligence and identify where Generative AI fits within it.
2. Operation of Large Language Models (LLMs): Describe the basics of how LLMs like GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) produce outputs, including, awareness of the LLM training process which uses vast amounts of data from the internet, books, and other sources. LLMs use different types of data to learn language, including written text from diverse sources such as research papers, scientific publications, literature, news, and social media. This wide range of data helps the model understand different styles, contexts, and tones.
3. Capabilities and Limitations of LLMs: Outline the effectiveness of LLMs to understand language, translate text, summarise information, and generate creative content. Also, outline their limitations, such as biases, ethical issues, and the risk of spreading misinformation.
4. Future Trends in GenAI: Discuss the latest advancements and potential future developments in Generative AI, and their applications in various industries.
Unit 2: Utilising GenAI Tools Ethically in Professional Contexts
1. Introduction to GenAI Tools: Identify a variety of up-to-date GenAI tools currently available, including text generators, image creators, and data synthesis tools. Describe how these tools can be used in professional settings relevant to the learner. For example, administrative tasks, content creation, marketing campaigns, HR and recruitment, data analysis, strategy development, social media and customer engagement.
2. Ethical and Legal Considerations: Outline the ethical guidelines and legal frameworks governing the use of AI in the context of the learner’s professional role. Discuss issues such as data privacy, intellectual property, and informed consent.
3. Responsible Use of GenAI: Develop skills to identify the appropriate use cases for GenAI tools, ensuring alignment with ethical standards and business/organisational policies. Explain basic approaches to mitigating potential risks associated with AI, such as bias, privacy breaches, and misinformation.
4. Create Multi-Modal Content with GenAI Tools: Practice using GenAI tools to produce diverse content types (e.g., text, image, video, audio) for various professional applications. Demonstrate how to tailor content for different audiences while maintaining ethical standards.
5. Use GenAI Tools Safely: Explore real-world examples where businesses have successfully or unsuccessfully integrated GenAI tools into their workflows. Reflect on lessons learned and consider best practices for ethical and compliant use of these technologies.
Unit 3: Prompt Crafting for Optimised AI Outputs
1. Develop Basic Prompt Crafting Skills: Define the concept of prompt crafting and demonstrate its application in optimising the outputs of Generative AI tools.
2. Use Techniques for Effective Prompt Crafting: Demonstrate how to create effective prompts by using specific keywords, phrases, and instructions to guide AI outputs. Analyse how varying the length, specificity, language and structure of prompts affects results.
3. Interact with Large Language Models (LLMs): Perform techniques for refining AI outputs through iterative interaction with LLMs. Use feedback loops with GenAI tools and demonstrate how successive prompts can enhance the relevance and accuracy of generated content.
4. Practically Apply Prompt Crafting in Relevant Business Contexts: Engage in hands-on activities to craft prompts for different professional scenarios, such as marketing content, internal communications, or customer support. Evaluate the effectiveness of different prompts in achieving desired and enhanced outputs.
Unit 4: Apply and Evaluate GenAI Solutions in Business Contexts
1. Select Appropriate GenAI Tools: Identify suitable GenAI tools and solutions that align with specific professional and/or business tasks.
2. Implement GenAI to Enhance Productivity: Demonstrate practical skills to integrate GenAI tools into daily workflows to enhance productivity. Reflect on interactions with these tools for specific tasks relevant to their role in the workplace.
3. Evaluate Impact and Limitations: Critically evaluate the impact of GenAI tools on basic business processes and outcomes. Reflect on the limitations of these tools and the importance of continuous monitoring and proofing.
4. Ethical Implications in Business Use: Reflect on the ethical considerations of applying GenAI solutions in a business context. Consider how to balance use of the tools with ethical responsibility and align AI use with organisational values and policies.
